My Philosophy

I believe it is important to create a community where all learners feel safe, respected and have a sense of belonging. It is important to focus equally on the social, emotional and academic needs of students. I strive to meet children where they're at by differentiating instruction, choosing developmentally appropriate activities and providing a balance between teacher-directed and self-directed learning. I value play, the arts, movement, creativity and laughter as important and meaningful parts of the learning process for children.

Pilobolus

We had a terrific field trip to the Flynn Theater this week to see Pilobolus.  We saw some very interesting dancing and acrobatics.  The children were amazed by the flexibility and talent of the dancers.  They were very excited to have a chance to participate a bit in the show.
This was Miss Blair's last week with us.  We had a party this afternoon and gave her all the wonderful books everyone sent in.  Miss Blair was very touched by all of your generosity.  She will be stopping by later this spring to do some subbing in the building and to visit our classroom.
The only homework students will have for the remainder of the school year is 20 minutes of reading every night.  I am asking that THEY write me a note each Friday to let me know that they have done their reading.  Parents only need to sign it or initial it.  I am encouraging them to continue practicing their math facts in whatever way works best for them.  I have also told them that I would like them to use the extra time they don't need to devote to homework to playing outside.  It is so important for kids this age to get outside and move.  There is much to be learned from play.
We finished our last Science/Engineering unit of the school year today.   Everyone designed windmill blades and tested them with their windmills.  We have some amazing engineers on the Firefly team!  Those windmills are coming home today and you are welcome to have your child try to improve their design at home to make them work even better.
Have a terrific weekend!
