My Philosophy

I believe it is important to create a community where all learners feel safe, respected and have a sense of belonging. It is important to focus equally on the social, emotional and academic needs of students. I strive to meet children where they're at by differentiating instruction, choosing developmentally appropriate activities and providing a balance between teacher-directed and self-directed learning. I value play, the arts, movement, creativity and laughter as important and meaningful parts of the learning process for children.

The Last Week of School!

This week Gracie shared her science table about stingrays.  She shared lots of information about stingrays, showed us how big they can get and shared her experience swimming with them in Florida.  We had lots of interest from the team and many questions for Gracie.  She did an excellent job answering every one of them!  Terrific job, Gracie!

This week our Talent Show continued.  Kira kicked off Monday's show by singing a song about the plant cycle, Will did a Houdini rope escape, Finny showed off his pogo stick jumping skills, and Sam performed a variety of magic tricks.  On Tuesday, Henry share a beautiful picture,Maddy sang a song while she jumped on a pogo stick, Reid showed drawings and Miss Claire face painted.  On Wednesday, Sarah sang for us, Adam and Nigel did drawings, Jordan played her violin, Zoe S. did gymnastics and Shahad and Hope signed Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.  On Thursday, John show his creation, Pam sang the alphabet backwards and Mrs. KillKelley juggled and did a head stand (not at the same time, of course!).  Wow, do we have a talented bunch of Adventurers!

We have spent the week enjoying craft day, field day, board game day, movie day and milk shake day.  Many thanks to all of the parents who helped make these end of year events a big success.  We also had some birthday shares and treats from Claudia, AJ and Finny.  A big thank you to their families for sharing their birthdays with us.

Progress reports will be coming home today in a manila envelope.  In addition to that, I have included a summer reading list for grades K-5 in your child's end of year gift package.

A HUGE thank you to all the Adventurers families for the very generous gift card gift.   My family is going on another RV trip to Maine and Canada this summer, I plan to use it for White Water Rafting. I will be posting a link to this summer's trip on this blog if anyone is interested in following our adventures.  We will be leaving Aug. 5th and returning Aug. 17th.

This has been an amazing year!  I have absolutely loved teaching first grade and am so looking forward to teaching second grade next year!  I feel so fortunate to be bringing the same group of children with me to second grade and look forward to getting to know all of my students and their families even better.  I have truly enjoyed having the opportunity to work with Pam this year for her last year of teaching and will miss her wisdom, sense of humor and friendship greatly next year.  The fall will bring changes again as Nancy Nakhleh joins me to create a new team.  We look forward to continuing some of the traditions we have had this year, such as the science table and creating some new traditions for our new team which will be called "Firefly".  Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful, amazing children with me this year and giving me the opportunity to continue their journey through elementary school with them for another year.  I hope everyone has a healthy, happy summer!

Wolves, Talent and Fairbanks Museum!

Olivia did her science table about wolves this week.  We learned that wolves travel in packs and include alpha, beta and omega wolves.  She used a tape measure to show us how tall a wolf is and showed us lots of interesting pictures about wolves.  Great job, Olivia!

This week we kicked off out talent show.  On Wednesday, Zoe and Isabel sang for us, Augusta and Ava did circus yoga, Benjamin performed some great magic tricks, Lucas, Derek and Alex did "funny stuff", AJ showed us is drawing talent, and Tula played the piano.   On Tuesday, Macy did some jump roping while she sang a jumping rhyme, Gracie hula hooped, Innogen and Claudia did some jump roping, and Ian did a "puppet show" using just his hands and voice.

We had a fantastic field trip to the Fairbanks Museum today.  We learned about the moon, flowers and had a great opportunity after lunch to explore the rest of the museum!  A big thank you to all our parent volunteers who attended this field trip.  If anyone is interested in visiting the Fairbanks Museum, admission is free with your library card!

A reminder that Tuesday is the K-2 Field Day.  Please send your child with a labeled water bottle, a hat and sunscreen.  Adventurers are encouraged to wear purple that day!

Tigers and Talent

This week Augusta did her science table about tigers.  We learned about the many different kinds of tigers, where they live and lots of other fun facts.  Super job, Augusta!

This week has also been Talent Week sign up.  Talent week will take place beginning on Wed., June 8th through the last week of school (June 13-17).  On Wed., June 8th AJ, Benjamin and Jack will share.  On Thurs., June 9th Gracie, Ian and Ali will share. On Monday, June 13th Finny and Sam will share.  On Tues., June 14th Evan , Innogen, Claudia Henry and Miss Claire will share.  On Wed., June 15th Zoe, Jordan, Shahad, Michelle and Rose will share.  On Thursday, June 16th John will share. Please make sure your child comes to school prepared on their day to share their talent.  We are strongly encouraging every student to participate in this event, but it is not mandatory.

Last week we finished up our last end of year assessments so this week has been a more low key week.  We have been getting back to Writer's Workshop, Guided Reading Groups and playing some fun Math games during math time.  We will be spending the next two weeks in math learning more about and practicing Mathematical Habits of Mind through math group work.  My hope is that we can continue this the first few weeks of school in the fall, then use this to guide our math experiences throughout next year.  This week we discovered a rule for adding doubles-the answer is always an even number! We also made some discoveries about subtracting 10 from a two digit number.

A quick reminder that our field trip to Fairbanks Museum is this Friday, June 10th.  We will be leaving at 7:30 am and returning at 3:30 pm, so your child will need transportation to and from school that day.  Please be sure to pack a bag lunch, beverage and snack for your child that day.  The bus will leave from the School St. parking lot, so be sure to have your child there before 7:30 am.  Please send in a note and contact number if someone other than a parent/guardian will be picking your child up that day.

Another reminder that this Thursday evening from 5-6:30 PM will be our Adventurers Team picnic at the Snelling field on the school grounds.  This is a potluck meal.  Please bring your own plates, cups, utensils beverages, something to sit on and a dish to share.

We are still looking for parents to do a craft on Monday, June 13th for craft day.  This will take place from 9-11 am.  If you can help out with this please send me an email.

A big thank you to Adam and his family for providing Friday snack for us!
