This was a quick week filled with lots of fun activities. The class enjoyed a delayed Valentine's Day Party and Hands On Nature on Monday. A huge thank you to our Hands On Nature parents for a terrific lesson about tracking this week. Our class learned about different track patterns and how they are used to identify animals and their activities.
We finished up our non-fiction units this week and are in the process of loading our non-fiction ebooks onto a google site linked to our blog. Please check the upper right corner of the blog for the link to these ebooks. If you do not have an Apple product
choose the PDF option. If you would like to have a copy of this it can be downloaded directly from the google site. We also finished our current Math and Fundations units this week. After the break we will begin new units in Reader's and Writer's Workshops, as well as Math and Fundations. We will be forming new reading groups and will spend the month of March doing Reader's Theater. This will be a fun opportunity to mix everyone up and work on fluency in reading.
Once again, there is no homework over vacation, but I have sent home math fact packets for students to do for fun if they would like to. They do not need to be returned to school.
I hope everyone has a terrific Winter Break!
My Philosophy
I believe it is important to create a community where all learners feel safe, respected and have a sense of belonging. It is important to focus equally on the social, emotional and academic needs of students. I strive to meet children where they're at by differentiating instruction, choosing developmentally appropriate activities and providing a balance between teacher-directed and self-directed learning. I value play, the arts, movement, creativity and laughter as important and meaningful parts of the learning process for children.

Snow Day
It was so nice to meet with everyone this week to discuss your child's growth in second grade. What a wonderful way to celebrate all the hard work they have been doing in second grade!
With our snow day tomorrow, we will have to post-pone our Valentine's Day Party until Monday. I will be sending home Friday Folders on Monday since they won't be going home tomorrow. No worries if your child can't complete the usual amount of homework. Just have them do what works for them and the time your family has available. There will be no homework during February Break, but I am sending home some math facts papers in Friday Folders next week for those students who would like to do them for fun over the break. There is no need to return them to school after the break.
Have a great weekend and enjoy the snow!

A Visit From Zero the Hero
Make your own free slideshow |
We spent Thursday doing 100th day activities and enjoyed a visit from Zero the Hero who read a book to us and did some math with us. It appears as though Zero decided to change his hair style this year and go with a longer, curlier look as well as a mustache! Thank you, Zero, where ever you are, for another fun 100th day visit!
This coming week will also be packed with fun activities. We will visit the Book Fair Monday to preview books, so you should be looking for a wish list to be coming home Monday afternoon. We will return to the Book Fair on Wednesday to purchase books, so please send in money on that day or before if your child will be buying something Thursday is Vermont Writes Day. Our school will be participating in a school wide "7 Minutes of Writing" and our class will all be writing in response to the same prompt. Friday morning we will enjoy another Hands On Nature lesson. Vicky will be in during the afternoon to teach us more about Mindfulness and we will spend the end of the day enjoying our Valentine Party. A big thank you to Erica, Deb, Anne, Melissa and Sara for signing up to bring drinks and food for our party. Our Valentine bags are finished and will be ready to be filled beginning this Monday. Your child may bring them in any day this week to put in bags.
Have a great weekend!
