Firefly First Grade has had a terrific week! We have spent the past three days getting to know each other and getting to know our classroom. We have been playing games, doing team building activities with Firefly Second Grade and talking about how we can support each other and create a classroom community where everyone feels safe, respected, valued and confident to take risks with their learning. We did a practice fire drill, went to the computer lab and learned how to log on to Fastt Math, have met all of our Unified Arts teachers and learned first grade routines. We have learned about how we can work together to keep our "I.A.L.A.C.'s" big and strong, have created and shared our "Hopes and Dreams" for first grade, and created a "Classroom Promise" together. Today we learned about our book corner and how we choose "Just Right Books". We have also been practicing "Private Reasoning Time" and learning about how we can support our friends by being respectful of their private reasoning time.
On Tuesday, we will begin to follow our regular schedule and be starting our first units of the school year. We will be learning about "Community", learning about sorting, graphing and counting in math through a "bug" theme, reviewing handwriting/alphabet/letter sounds in Fundations and will launch our Readers/Writers Workshops through Red Clover books.
It has been so much fun getting to know all of your wonderful children this week! I am already seeing a terrific learning community coming together and look forward to working and learning with you and your children over the next two years!
A quick reminder that this Thurs. (Sept. 6th) is the Firefly Curriculum Night in our team space from 5-6 PM. I look forward to seeing everyone there!
My Philosophy
I believe it is important to create a community where all learners feel safe, respected and have a sense of belonging. It is important to focus equally on the social, emotional and academic needs of students. I strive to meet children where they're at by differentiating instruction, choosing developmentally appropriate activities and providing a balance between teacher-directed and self-directed learning. I value play, the arts, movement, creativity and laughter as important and meaningful parts of the learning process for children.
