Pajama Party/Movie Friday!
Firefly will be celebrating finishing The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe on tomorrow with a pajama party and popcorn and a movie. We will be watching the animated version of the book (it's a non-rated, less scary version). If you have any concerns about your child seeing this movie, please let me know.

A Very Busy Week!
On Monday we visited the Flynn for a performance called "Cuentos". "With colorful tales and music from the Caribbean, South America, Spain,
and the Bronx, brilliant storyteller David Gonzalez paints a vivid
picture of the people and rich cultures of the Spanish-speaking world.
Enchanting characters from Puerto Rico, Cuba, Colombia, and other
countries inhabit this upbeat introduction to the vast treasury of
literature created in Latino cultures. Cuentos! is performed
in English, but Spanish words spice up stories and songs, giving
students the chance to learn and retain their meaning." This was an amazing show that was incredibly engaging and funny for everyone.
Monday afternoon Henry did a terrific Discovery table about the Titanic. He made game about the Titanic and showed us a map of the Titanic's journey. Great job, Henry!
On Tuesday we had our final Hands On Nature lesson for the school year. We learned about dandelions and other flowers. We learned about the different parts of flowers and spent some time dissecting different kinds of flower. We put the pistils, stamens and other parts on paper and compared them to each other. Finally, we listened to a story about dandelions. A big thank you to our Hands On Nature parents for another great lesson!
On Thursday we visited Shelburne Farms to learn about farming. We began our day at the Dairy Barn. We milked a cow, visited the calves and saw a baby being born. We traveled to the Farm Barn by wagon. We ate lunch at the Farm Barn and learned how cheddar cheese is made. Then we had an opportunity to watch cheese being "cheddared". It was a fantastic day of learning about the farm! A big thank you to all of our parent volunteers for making this a great trip!
Flat Stanley has been arriving daily in the mail from his adventures around the world. He has visited Ohio, Pennsylvania, Alaska, Florida, California and many other destinations. We have been sharing a few of his adventures every day and will continue to do so for the next week or so. If you are in school be sure to check out the bulletin board outside the Firefly space to see all the places he has traveled.
Today Benjamin brought his cello in and played several songs for us. We were all very impressed with his talented playing!

Field Trips
We have a busy week ahead with a field trip to the Flynn to see "Cuentos" on Monday and a field trip to Shelburne Farms on Thursday. Please make sure your child comes to school with a pocket snack and bag lunch on Thursday as we will be having our lunch at Shelburne Farms. We will be leaving school at 9:15 and arriving back at 1:45. Those of you who are chaperoning, please send me an email to confirm you are still coming. I know schedules are busy this time of year and availability may change.
We will be moving away from homework for the remainder of the school year. Spring is here and I am a firm believer that kids should be outside playing! We will be busy here at school working very hard on end of year assessments-a break from homework will be well deserved. I will still be sending "Home Connections" for the next few weeks and have told students they can still do Fasst Math and hand in any extra homework they would like to do, but will not be require the weekly homework we have been doing all year.
We had a great week back from vacation! Zoe did a Discovery Table about "Hearing Loss". She talked about parts of the ear and how hearing loss occurs. She showed us hearing aids and molds, and had us put cotton balls in our ears to simulate hearing loss. Her mother read us a story about hearing loss. Great job, Zoe!
We started a poetry unit and have been learning about probability, fractions and graphing in math. We also enjoyed an Arbor Day Celebration with songs, poems and the planting of a tree on the school grounds. In addition to that, our Flat Stanleys have been arriving daily from all over the country! We will be sharing about all our Flat Stanleys' adventures next week.
Please try to get the Field Day T-shirt order forms back to school as soon as possible as w need to place the order by Friday, May 11th.
